Gem’s TV handset

Gem's TV handset
This TV remote control was created almost entirely in Photoshop for Gems TV. I had a scan of a remote control but I re-did most of the buttons using the Drop Shadow, Outer Glow, Bevel and Emboss layer styles. I used the Inner Shadow layer style on the cross surrounding the directional buttons. The black plastic background of the handset is a couple of linear blends with noise added for texture.

  1. Interesting remote. Kind of hard to use without and text on the keys

  2. Hmmm I am not sure. Something is not quite right, seems unfinished somehow. I am wondering how you could add more realism to it, as the gems still look like pasted cut-outs. The look flat.

The way I would go about it. Would be to experiment with 3D modelling applications. Study and observe how light scatters (even if ever so subtly) through gemstones.

All gems have a black ring around it – I would experiment with making that ring a gradient of some sort – to create an illusion of depth. You know like as grey-black gradient goes for an object , the reverse (black-grey) goes for the stroke.

Still interesting, if not curious, design project.

  3. I did the black rings around the gems in order to make it look like they were like buttons. If I was to do it again I would make the gems brighter.
