My New Kindle about Online Teaching is Published – Don’t Buy It!

Hot on the heels of my first Kindle book, Running A Web Design Business From Home, my second book is now in the Kindle store. I’ve now published How To Sell Video Courses Online which is about making over $1000 a month passively by becoming an online instructor.

My online teaching story

At the beginning of this year (2013), I put my first free course on Udemy, the online learning platform. It was a collection of videos that showed how you could create a website from scratch using WordPress and the Genesis theme framework.

I didn’t think much of it at the time – just another online platform for me to peddle my wares. I’ve tried so many in my time. However, pretty soon I was amassing followers and engagement with this particular course.

And then I was delighted when, in March, my first premium course Create a Website with Responsive Design, actually started to sell. It was slow at first. However, a free course on the platform means a ready-made “fan base” that are more likely to buy your paid-for products.

I added two more free courses during the summer months . As I have an extensive YouTube “back catalog” I find creating free courses quite easy.

I then added two more premium courses: Running A Web Design Business and Build Your Brand which is about blogging, SEO, social media and business relationships.

As the months passed and my followers on the platform increased, I was able to bring in over $1000 every month.

udemy payment statements

A word of caution should be added here. The online platform where I made this money, Udemy, recently changed their commission structure. Instructors now get a much lower percentage of their course sales. I’m getting around 40-50% whereas I used to get around 70-80%. However I think I can guarantee at least $1000 every month passively for the foreseeable future from my courses.

I was desperate to get this story onto digital paper. I think a lot of people would benefit from knowing about online teaching. So far sales have been good. It may be too early to tell because everything changes in the online world. But I think I have created a springboard of passive earnings that will hopefully grow over the coming months and years.

Why I don’t want you to buy it

I will be offering the Kindle book for free in a few days time. If you are signed up to my newsletter I will send you an email to notify you of the beginning of the five day free promotion.

It’s priced at only $0.99 for now. After the free promotion it will be $2.99. This is the exactly the same strategy I used with my first Kindle book which resulted in a few good reviews which means it now sells a few copies everyday.

Amazon reviews

So, even though I don’t really want you to buy it, I know some of you will. And if you do buy it, I would appreciate a review on Amazon (the more five-star review I get the higher the number of free downloads during the promotion period). Here are the links. 😉

If you’re not in the UK, the US or India, simply go to your local Amazon site and search “How To Sell Video Courses Online”. If Amazon doesn’t sell my book in your country, my apologies. It’s beyond me why Amazon can’t supply digital products to all countries in the Middle East and Africa but, for some reason, I’m afraid it can’t. My apologies to those who can’t buy this book or get it for free. If this is the case for you, please contact me.

Reading Kindles

You don’t need a Kindle to read a Kindle book. Far from it! Kindle books can be read on Macs, PCs, iPads, tablets, iPhones, Android devices, you name it – all you have to do is download the Kindle app.

You can do it

I don’t know what to say here – you can write a Kindle or you can create online courses and earn passive income? Either? Both! You can do it, you know you can! And a lot of you are! :)

Here is more on how to sell video courses with Udemy and how I made $1421.20 on Udemy in a week.

As always, if you have any questions, I’d be happy to help.

Did this help you? If so, please share!

    Hi Rob
Your previous info on your earnings has lead me to start making a video course for Udemy.
Sad to learn that they are offering a lot less for their commissions now, but I think it is a great way to get a ready made audience for a new course.
    Thanks for the inspiration

Hey Ashley, that’s great to hear. Are you doing a free course first? Be sure to let me know if you have any questions about Udemy or the course creation process. I’m so delighted you’re going for this :) best of luck! I’m sure you’ll have success with it.

    Hey Rob

Awesome to read about your success with Udemy (and your Kindle book); you’re killing it!

I know you said it was easy putting the courses together because you had a lot of video content to begin with, but generally, what do you consider to be the hardest part of product creation?

Hello, Mena. Well, I could be clever-clever and say that the hardest part of product creation is starting the project. The hardest part of video tutorials is the editing – it has taken me hours to edit five minutes of video in the past. I picked up the technique of shooting video tutorials after doing it repeatedly for months and months. At first they were truly dreadful. However, other people are much better at it and pick it up much more quickly. And I have a feeling that you might be one of those people!

Other than that, the subject and the structure of the course or product have always come to me quite easily because I create the course around something I know really well. Hope this helps!

    Hey Rob

Yes that does help, thank you. I’m certainly going to dip my toes into the course creation water more in the New Year and see what happens. Need to work on my video making skills and get myself a decent mic. :)

Hey Rob, I finally finished reading your book and man, I’m stoked on it!

Now I can see why Steve Scott is also a fan of your work since this is definitely really inspiring stuff for other aspiring Internet Marketers and Online Creatives as well.

I look forward to check out the rest of your trainings, I’m particularly interested in what you do with the Genesis platform so I’m aiming for the “Creating a Business Website with a Responsive Design” course.

Thanks again man and all the best!

I also published few books on Amazon Kindle. Next year, I’ll move on to VDO course on Udemy too. I also downloaded your book. I’ll read and give you my review when I’m done. I think your book could be guideline for me to build VDO course on Udemy. I hope you’re going well with everything.

Hello Raweewan, welcome to the site. I’m delighted to hear you are going to do a Udemy course. What’s VDO, by the way? Please get in touch if you need any help with course creation or anything else.

I hope you find the Kindle book useful and, if you do, a review would be really nice. I’ve just received my first bad review! :(
