DoFollow plugin not installed on my blog

Attention from October 2008: This is no longer a DoFollow blog.

All comments from this website will have the nofollow command and therefore if you’re after a bit of link juice you best go elsewhere. If you’re a genuine commenter then I’m sorry I can’t reward you with a proper link. I’ve just got tired of deleting all the rubbish comments from people with keywords for names.

From May 1st 2007, if you commented on this site and added your url, search engine spiders would have followed to your site. Google would have counted it as a link to your site from a page with a PageRank from 1 to 4 – an all important “vote” of importance for your website, hopefully resulting in greater appearance and frequency in search engine results.

By default, WordPress, the blogging software which powers this site, adds the rel=nofollow command to all links in comments. And this DoFollow plugin removes rel=nofollow command allowing those search engine robots to follow.

You can subscribe to new posts via RSS or by email, or follow me on Twitter.

  1. Another one joins the ranks… Thanks for the link, rob.

This is the first time I’ve come across your site – there’s some good stuff here :)

  2. Thanks Aaron, I was very impressed with your site as well. I’ll return soon!

And well done for explaining the DoFollow issue so well!

  3. Good to see you’ve joined up, Rob.

I hope it creates a benefit for you. I’m pretty sure it has for me.

  4. It’s a good point, Frédéric, but so far so good :)
The comments are intelligent and add something to the site, like yours!
    Rob

  5. I installed the DOFOLLOW plugin too primarily because I truly support the cause.

    Anyway, thinks for the link.

  6. Have you checked out the Dofollow community on Bumpzee?

  7. I’ve just checked out Bumpzee and registered my blog. Thanks for the tip!

  8. YAY! Another one.. I have started a directory, you can have a free link there if you like.

It’s great to see so many folks getting on board. :)

  9. That’s a good idea for a website, Julia. I’ve submitted three links of websites that I run. :)

  10. this is great. but i won’t instal this plugin in my blog. i think there will be more spamers

  11. Actually in my experience there hasn’t been any discernable increase in spam in the three months since intalling this plugin.
Akismet sorts it all out and it’s not a problem! :)

  12. Hope it’s helping your traffic and comments.
    Thank you

  13. As with so many of these things, perhaps we’ll never know! Let’s hope it increases traffic and comments at least a little bit.

  14. This sounds interesting. Here goes nothing!

Thank you for having all of this info!

  15. Its ironic that many bloggers talk about this but then they actually use no follow.

  16. More bloggers should follow your example. Whatever happened to being part of a community.

  17. @Hobosin Love
    @Bape
    @Xavier
Thank you, doFollow is still active!

  18. Thanks for the information about the “do follow” plugin. We’ve been considering WordPress for an upcoming project and have been exploring the various plugins, etc.

    Enjoy the day!
    JB

  19. I can only recommend WordPress as a blogging platform and CMS. Let me know if you need any help with it!
    Rob

  20. Rob,
1st off, thanks for the link. Secondly, do you have any policy on keyword names (like I have done here?)

Some people don’t allow it, others weigh the quality of the comment…I was curious on your take…however, I suppose if your opposed to it this comment will never make the page.

    Cheers.

  21. Hello, the awesomeness poster, I’m not sure what link you are referring to.
My policy is if the comment is relevant then people can call themselves what they want. I really just like comments for what they’re supposed to be – beautiful internet interaction that we can all benefit from. Which is what this is. Thank you!
By the way, I leave my keywords when I comment on other sites as “Rob Cubbon – freelance graphic designer London”. It may be a bit cheeky but no one’s objected yet!

  22. Installing this plug-in may be one of the best actions a blogger can take! it improves your comment number and this is one of the most important factors when it comes to blogging. What shows the fact that a blog is visited and active? The comment number!

  23. A good thing to do. Just beware of spam. Akismet is there to protect you I guess, otherwise you must be facing hard times ;-) I know on my blog I receive quite a lot of spam comments.

  24. glad to hear that.

  25. Wow this is great. Thanks for the info. Glad to see peeps helping each other out. Oh and I must say that I really like the layout of your site; clean, functional and easy to use..

  26. Thank you to the last four posters who’ve shown support by adding your comments. I think it’s nice to see a bit a feedback after posts. I still have the plugin activated – I’ve had no real bad spam issues so far. I noticed Akismet needed an upgrade recently and, for me, that keeps the worse at bay. Thanks for coming round, thanks for the comments, thanks for the encouragement! 8)

  27. dofollow – some issues activating it with blogger – any suggestions?

  28. Hi Thomas. I’m not an expert with Blogger, only WordPress. But I did find this…
    http://webstractions.blogspot.com/2007/05/processing-classic-ftp-blogger-pages-as.html
    Hope it helps!

  29. going to add the plugin to my blog now. thanks for info.

  30. Do you now get lots of boring comments from people just to get a backlink? You know, the kind like “good post!” and “thanks for the info.”

Come to think of it…ALL comments are like that on blogs, dofollow or not :)

  31. I have a policy now, J P, of deleting the obvious two word comment spam like “nice post”. But honestly, most comments are like yours, intelligent and relevant. I know what you mean some comments are just fairly token, but I don’t mind those on mine, at least it means take people are visiting and contributing.

@computer training, I can recommend it. Good luck!

  32. Sir, I found your do follow logo and will add at my blog…
    Thanks…

  33. I’m glad you like the logo, sapimoto. :)

  34. Well done for the nofollow addition.

I think you will benefit as much as the people commenting from the valuable feedback you will receive.

Now you need to hunt out commentluv and keywordluv to really reward your followers!

    Cheers

  35. Hello Olly, You’ll notice that CommentLuv is here. I always follow my commentors’ advice! Valuable feedback indeed!

  36. that’s nice social act to the blogger community :)

  37. Really appreciate the link love Rob. I’ll be back.

  38. Thanks for offering the clarification about this: I’ve been curious exactly how that worked. It’s amazing to me how the google search engine works.

  39. [...] Recently, I installed the DoFollow plugin for WordPress—something I’ve been intending to do for a few weeks now. One of the first places I learned about this tool was on a blog post by London-based graphic designer Rob Cubbon. [...]

  40. I am amazed at how many people are picking up on this movement, and how many just aren’t. Getting a few good comments all for a free link back to some sites? Now that’s a great bargain for both parties!

  41. Link love for all is always nice. We went dofollow about a month ago but haven’t really seen a boost in either traffic or comments yet.

What’s more, I’m surprised at how difficult it is to get listed on most people’s dofollow lists or in the dofollow directories. I mean, it seems easy by their instructions but I have applied to several and sent emails (as requested on sites) and only got 1 response! I do believe in the dofollow movement but it’s seems to be getting a lot harder to get that word out that you are…heh, and I thought everyone loved free link love.

  42. oh and Rob…I saw your comment on Andrew Kelsall blog (trackback from below) and I did want you to know I have been reading your blog since I first saw this post (I think we actually emailed some). You’ve got great content and I think that dofollow only helps more people find you, I came for the link love but you won a regular because of it.
PS.Your RSS has been on my google homepage for sometime too!

  45. Have you noticed an increase in comments made on your blog because of the plugin? I’m wondering if giving links out would increase the amount of comments to a blog post.

  46. I followed you by install nofollow remover plugin. Sure commentluv plugin included too. Let’s do dofollow

    Thanks

  48. Ooooh, lots of comments!
I like to do a good social act for the blogging community. It has helped me, only fair I should help it. Thank you, How to do Freelancer Diary!!!

@Peter Morrow, thanks, LinkLuv is nofollow, so far. But it’s still cool!

@Edinburgh Lover, I’m far from an expert on Google, but, yes, it’s amazing.

@Gotham, yes, you definitely do get more comments and most of them are good.

@Funny Forwards, thank you for your two great comments. I’m surprised you should be finding it hard to get on the DoFollow lists. I would have thought that inclusion should be fairly instantaneous. Keep at it! People do tend to look for DoFollow blogs with high PageRank. But then again, you don’t want a load of worthless comments from a lot of webmasters looking for link juice. I love your point about being a subscriber as a result of this post. For me, a subscriber is a piece of gold dust and really, that’s proof that DoFollow pays off. Hang in there. Your blog is laugh-out-load funny, by the way! :)

@James. No, I would say you definitely don’t get significantly more traffic from going DoFollow. Just one or two a day from DoFollow lists. You do get more comments, however!

    @Personal Business, thanks will do!

@Tanner, once the word gets around that you are DoFollow and you have a PageRank of 2 or more then, yes, you will get significantly more comments.

@Pramudita, welcome to the DoFollow gang!

@Graphic Designer London, welcome to you also! :)

  49. Congrats on joining the DoFollow revolution! I did it a while back and have never looked back.

It is a great way to help out your readers and encourage them to say something more often : )

Justin Wrights last blog post..5 Questions For My Readers

  50. Thank you Justin, I’m afraid I’m no longer a DoFollow blog. I got myself onto a lot of DoFollow lists and word got around and eventually I ended up getting tons of comment spam from people wanting a cheap PR3 link.

I’d love to help my readers and encourage good comments, like yours, but in the end I just got tired of rooting through all the rubbish!

  51. Keep up the great work ;)

  52. This is a great idea…thanks for the plugin!

  53. Too bad, but I really can understand your decision.
Dofollow does indeed attrect tons of spammers.

  54. Glad to hear that, i think it will increase comments numbers

  55. It is nice to see bloggers who are trying to solve spam problem with solution other than adding nofollow to all commenters links. I have just launched new blog and also left comment links dofollowed. My plan to combat spam is to read first time commenters comments before publishing and than delete them if spammy, if not, publish them with dofollow.

  56. Very nice post on do follow plugins, and these are very useful for my blogs, thanks.

  57. THIS IS NO LONGER A DOFOLLOW BLOG.

Posting here will not give you a backlink if that is what you want please go elsewhere.

Above are two or three examples of comments from spammers that were the reason for me putting back the rel=nofollow from the comments in this blog. They haven’t bothered to read the post and they have left meaningless comments that don’t benefit anyone.

Unfortunately I ended up on a few sites that posted links to dofollow blogs and I got spammed by just about every idiot who thinks writing “nice post, dude” on my site is going to get them a bit of link juice from Google and money from Adsense. Wrong!

Eskil, thanks for your comment and understanding.

Used motorhomes, maybe one day I’ll do what you do but for now I just want people with something sensible to say!

Thank you for the real, intelligent commenters who have added to this discussion. Those spammers who have left two or three words with keywords for names can … go away. They were always deleted immediately and never got any benefit from their actions. They just wasted their time!

  58. Your web page doesn’t correctly work in safari browser

  59. Thank you for your comment, oxitnexia, I have tested the site on Safari on Mac OS 10.5 and Windows Vista and it seems to be OK. Can you tell me what’s wrong and what system you are using?

  60. This post is really a must bookmarked for me! Thank you so much. :D
Just asking, do you use Aweber? If so, can you provide more information on this? I am subscribed to your rss to check if you are going to post something on Aweber. :)

  61. dofollow plugin not installed on my blog…

… the rel=nofollow command to all links in comments. and this dofollow plugin removes rel=nofollow command allowing those search engine robots to follow….
